Advance directive

Under Swiss law, an adult with capacity may make an advance directive specifying accepted or refused medical measures and, often, naming a representative. It becomes relevant when the person can no longer consent, for example after severe illness or accident. Health professionals must clarify its existence and respect it unless it is unlawful, unclear, outdated in a material way, or no longer reflects presumed wishes. Clear drafting, dating, signature and accessible storage reduce disputes among relatives and care teams.
